Yaletown Dentistry / Services / Gum disease
Gum disease can develop without obvious symptoms. Measurements help us assess it and plan care.
Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the tissue and bone holding your teeth in. Early on it is bleeding gums and nothing else. Later it is bone loss, and bone does not grow back on its own.
We measure it rather than eyeball it: a probe reads the depth of the pocket around each tooth, and those numbers are recorded so we can tell whether treatment is working.

Gingivitis is reversible with proper cleaning, professional and at home.
Deep cleaning below the gum, sometimes over more than one appointment.
Shorter intervals between hygiene visits, because it comes back.
Most of this is won or lost at home, and we will show you what actually works.
Poorly controlled gum disease is associated with diabetes and heart disease.
You get an itemised written estimate before anything starts. We bill your insurance directly, so you usually pay only your own portion on the day, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan is accepted. In-house financing is available through PaySpyre, so treatment can be paid for over time.
No. Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding is the earliest sign of gum inflammation and it is the stage at which it is easiest to reverse.
Gingivitis can be reversed completely. Once bone has been lost, treatment stabilises it rather than regrowing it — which is why catching it early matters.
The area is numbed. Gums can be tender for a day or two afterwards.
More often than the standard six months if you have had bone loss — commonly every three to four months.
