A couple of minutes at the end of a cleaning, for people whose teeth actually need it.
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth after a cleaning. It strengthens enamel against acid and can arrest early decay before it ever becomes a filling.
It is not automatic for everyone. It makes a real difference for children, for people with dry mouth, for anyone with a run of new cavities, and for exposed root surfaces — and much less for a low-risk adult.
