What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses safe, carefully controlled medication to help you feel calm and comfortable during treatment. Depending on the level of sedation, you might feel deeply relaxed and a little drowsy, or drift into a light sleep — while staying safe and monitored the entire time. It is a good fit for anyone who feels uneasy in the dental chair, has a strong gag reflex, has trouble getting freezing to work, or simply wants to complete more treatment in fewer visits.

Is sedation right for you?

Sedation dentistry can help if you:

  • Feel anxious, nervous, or fearful about dental appointments
  • Have had a difficult or painful experience at the dentist before
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex or find it hard to sit still
  • Need several procedures done in a single appointment
  • Have trouble getting fully numb with local anesthetic
  • Have special healthcare needs that make dental treatment challenging

Not sure if it is right for you? Call us and we will talk it through — no pressure, just a plan that works for you.

Sedation options at Yaletown Dentistry

We offer two levels of sedation so we can match the right approach to how you feel and to the treatment you need. Both are provided by our sedation-certified dentist under strict safety protocols, with your comfort and safety looked after throughout.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation is taken as a prescribed tablet before your appointment. It eases anxiety and leaves you feeling calm and drowsy while you stay awake and able to respond. It is a simple, effective option for mild to moderate dental anxiety, and because it takes time to wear off, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.

IV sedation

For a deeper level of relaxation, we offer IV (intravenous) sedation, which delivers medication directly into the bloodstream. It works quickly and can be adjusted precisely throughout your appointment — most patients remember little to nothing about the visit afterward. Your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels are monitored the entire time. IV sedation calls for advanced training and certification, and it is ideal for higher anxiety, longer procedures, or anyone who simply wants to be fully at ease. You will need someone to drive you home.

What to expect

Before any sedation, we review your health history and discuss the right approach for you. On the day of your appointment, we get you settled and comfortable, begin your sedation, and complete your treatment while you relax. Afterward, the effects wear off gradually — plan to take the rest of the day easy, skip driving and big decisions, and have someone stay with you until you feel like yourself again.

Ready to relax?

You deserve dental care that does not cost you a sleepless night beforehand. If anxiety or a bad past experience has kept you away, let us help you change that. Call Yaletown Dentistry at 604-801-6669 or book online, and we will find the most comfortable way forward. We are at 1050 Hamilton Street, in the heart of Yaletown.

Sedation dentistry FAQs

What is the difference between oral and IV sedation?

Oral sedation is a tablet you take before your visit that keeps you calm and relaxed while you stay awake. IV sedation is given through a vein for a deeper, more adjustable level of relaxation, and most patients remember little about the appointment. We will help you choose the option that suits your anxiety level and treatment.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. Sedation dentistry is very safe when it is provided by trained professionals. We review your health history first, tailor the sedation to you, and monitor you throughout your appointment. Our sedation is provided by our sedation-certified dentist under strict safety protocols.

Will I be asleep during my treatment?

It depends on the level of sedation. With oral sedation you stay relaxed but awake, while with IV sedation most patients feel as though they slept and remember little about the visit. You are closely monitored the entire time and can be roused if needed.

Can I drive myself home after sedation?

No. After both oral and IV sedation you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and keep an eye on you for a few hours afterward. We will go over all of this with you before your appointment.

Can sedation help with dental anxiety?

Absolutely — easing dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons patients choose sedation. If fear has kept you from the dentist, tell us, and we will find a comfortable option so you can finally get the care you need.
