What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any problem that needs urgent care to relieve pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common emergencies include:

  • A broken or chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • Severe tooth pain
  • Bleeding in the mouth that won’t stop
  • A swollen face or gums
  • An infection that causes pain or fever

Not sure if it counts? Call us at 604-801-6669 and we’ll help you decide over the phone.

What to do in a dental emergency

Knocked-out tooth

Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water, and try to reinsert it into the socket right away. If you can’t, keep it moist in a container of milk and see an emergency dentist within 30 to 60 minutes — the sooner you are seen, the better the chance of saving it.

Bleeding or swelling

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling and discomfort. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers, but never place aspirin directly on the gums, as it can burn the tissue.

Broken or chipped tooth

Rinse with warm water and save any pieces you can find. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek will help with swelling until we can see you.

Tooth pain

Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss to clear any trapped food. Over-the-counter pain relief can help until your appointment. If pain is severe or comes with fever or swelling, call us right away.

When to call a professional

At Yaletown Dentistry, we’re ready to help with emergency dental care near you. Our team will guide you through the first steps over the phone and prepare for your arrival. If you have swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, seek care immediately — for life-threatening swelling, go to your nearest emergency room.

What an emergency visit costs

In British Columbia, dental fees follow the BC Dental Association Fee Guide, so there are no surprises. The total depends on what your tooth needs — from a focused emergency exam and X-ray to treating an infection. We will always review the estimate and your options with you before any treatment begins, and we’re happy to discuss insurance and payment.
